Michael J. O’Herron, 66, of Bellingham, MA passed peacefully with family by his side at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the early morning hours of August 21, 2026 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. His unwavering presence will be greatly missed.
Mike was born on November 23, 1959 in Charleston, SC to Margot (Hegner) O’Herron and John J. O’Herron. The second of seven children, Mike was always known for his incredible ability to rhyme and make a poem out of anything, earning him the name ‘Grandpun’ from his grandchildren. To know Mike was to know that there was a joke hidden somewhere in whatever he was trying to tell you. Even during his cancer treatment, the wonderful staff at Dana Farber came to know him for his quick wit and humor. He would often come in for treatment with a new pun to share with everyone he met.
An incredibly hardworking man, Mike was deeply dedicated to his work as Director of Operations for the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston for almost 40 years, and to serving his community. He was an active member of the Bellingham Conservation Commission and the Friends of the Library in Bellingham, and former member of the Bellingham School Committee, and always willing to help anyone in need.
Yet his greatest joys in life were spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, working in the yard creating beautiful gardens, and reading almost any kind of book he could get his hands on.
Mike is survived by his wife Katherine (Jones) O’Herron of Bellingham, MA; his daughter Caitlin O’Herron (Jack Ambrose) of Uxbridge, MA; his son Devin O’Herron of Brooklyn, NY; his two beloved grandchildren Ian and Madeline, and six siblings Mary Joan (Ignatius) Kashapata, Daniel O’Herron, Peter (Liz) O’Herron, Anne (Michael Covarrubias) O’Herron, David (Jeanmarie) O’Herron, and Michelle (Jerell Price) O’Herron.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Blaise Church, 1158 South Main Street,Bellingham MA on Wednesday September 23, 2026 at 9 am with a reception to celebrate his life to follow in the parish hall. Mike asked that this be a true celebration, so please plan to wear green to honor his spirit.
The Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. is honored to assist the O'Herron family.
